Outdoor shower / shou sugi ban

  1. Client Request

From Colombia, our client wanted a tropical oasis in the backyard. A place to relax, a place to unwind, and a place to shower under the sway of palm leaves during the day and bright stars at night.

11. Partnership

Together we walked through the backyard to discuss how they would use the space, who would use the space, and how it could flow with the outdoor fire pit space that we previously built.

III. Process

After the consultation, we provided a design and estimate for the project. Once it was client approved, we got to work.

III. DETAILS

We thought of ever detail. In the walkway leading up to the shower, we set these stones level and are keeping the planting space between the treads lower to give it a different height and feel. It emphasizes the lines in the stone; all of the plants will be below and it won’t allow them to grow up to the top.

Lines: the lines in the stone placement and the plant selection mimic the intentionally vertical lines in the wood, to lead the user to the shower and calm them along the way.

IV. Shou Sugi Ban

Shou sugi ban, or yakisugi (焼杉) means ‘charred cedar board,’ and is the product of a traditional Japanese wood preservation technique. With this sustainable method, wood is burnt to make it naturally last for decades and stay protected from the elements.

V. The Result

A beautiful space the the family can enjoy throughout the years. Stay tuned for photographs.
